Hi Nate,
I would think epoxy on the 4 pieces of rebar would be fine, especially since you are going to be off-setting each row of 16" concrete block so the cells offset and tie into each other. When you pour cement into those cells with the rebar, it will tie the whole thing together nicely.

Are you at the point of building your base sides yet?

I have been working over the last few days to get everything ready for the hearth slab pour.

Update on the rebar and epoxy situation...I decided to not put epoxy into the one hole and I figured the concrete would just fill in or at least firm up the connection. And now that it is all done and the concrete has been poured the wall seems to be fine and doesn't feel like it will be going anywhere.

I decided to go with a form similar to Russell's Beehive in Utah build but at the last minute I decided to shorten the front wood storage area and add a second storage area on the back side. I put the support wall down the center to hopefully give me good structural strength and with a solid support form underneath I hope it will all hold together when I pour the concrete. I included some pictures of the corner cuts I made to finish the support wall. They kind of serve two purposes since I am also using them to close off the inside of the rear storage area so that nothing can climb back there.

Thanks GGoose! Don't look at the center wall too closely or you might see my lack of symmetry.

Yesterday I got all the forms built to support the hearth slab and I kind of took what might be a non-traditional option as far as the support forms go. I actually made most of it so that I could just knock it out with a hammer and only used about 6 screws throughout the rest. I hope this holds up and turns out to be a good idea. Any thoughts? I also cut the concrete board to fit just inside of the rebar coming out of the cinder block. I used a diamond blade on my circular skill saw and it worked amazingly well. I highly recommend that option to anybody cutting concrete board. Something I did on the concrete board was that I cut it about 1/2" back from the edge of the front and rear openings so that hopefully the concrete I pour in the form will fill it in and the concrete board won't show. Does anybody see that as a problem? I hope it works.

I am still hoping to go out and finish framing up the hearth slab form and getting the rebar ready if it will cool down a bit. My build is in the shade right now but it is still very warm outside and since I still have light for about 4 hours I might still get that done.

I haven't made as much progress as I was hoping but I still made some so I will take what I can.

Hi Nate,

You have been busy. Nice mod on wood storage. Framing looks good for hearth pour. Yeah, it has been hot down here too. Finally crap out this afternoon and took a siesta. Just came back in from mortaring a couple key tie-ins to the arch. If you can, IMHO, I would cut back the durarock (where it is a 1/2" from the edge) so the cell of the CMU is exposed, like you did in on the other sides, then you get a intergrated of the hearth pour into the CMU. Only an inch more would do. But if you don't make sure you vibrate this areas extra good. Looking good.

Thanks for the suggestion. I know what you mean and I was trying to leave each cell partially exposed so that it could tie into the slab but maybe I missed one. I will check it. Thanks for the idea.

Nate,

I was looking at your pictures and noticed the cement board (I think you commented on this point) in some areas extending nearly to the outer edge of the blocks. This will prevent the walls from bonding to the slab, resulting in a potentially weaker structure. I don't claim to be an expert on such things but if this were my build I would cut the cement board back to allow the slab concrete to fill/top off the wall cavities, thus the entire structure will bond together for maximum strength. Otherwise the slab will simply be resting on the cement board, which is resting on the walls...

Just a thought.

Here's my second attempt to get pictures up. Hopefully these will be larger and easier to view than the last attempts. We will see.

I am reposting some pictures that show what I think Russell and Gene are worried about. You both mentioned cutting back the concrete board back so that the concrete will be able to sink down into the cores and integrate the hearth slab into the base. I understand what you are saying and totally agree with you but let me explain a little. The small parts where I have only left a little exposed is where my concrete slab with cross over my openings and there is no cinder block below it. So what is being shown is actually the wood frame underneath the concrete board that will be removed once my slab is poured and cured. Does that make any sense? So the only reason I cut it back a little bit and didn't take it all the way to the edge is because I didn't want the concrete board showing through. I hope that explanation is better. I will post some more pictures right after this.

Here are some different angles so you can see the form underneath the spots that I believe are in question. Once I build the slab form around the base there will be about a 1/2" to 1" space to be filled with concrete and will hopefully leave a better (prettier) edge than the concrete board.

Thanks for the concerns and the compliments. It lets me know people are looking out for me. I am glad the geometry looks good still and we will see if it continues.

As far as the angles go, that diamond blade cut through the cinder blocks like a hot knife through butter. I was very pleased with how well that worked. I would recommend it to anyone...as well as a dusk mask, ear protection and safety glasses.

My brothers-in-law helped me last night frame up my hearth slab form to be ready for a slab pour this Friday. We got the idea of using actual 2x4s (not today's 2x4) to get our forms exactly 4" above the brick. It worked great and was so much easier than what I had started trying to do. It was a good idea. Here are three pictures of the process.

And I have officially sacrificed/offered up my first piece of equipment when a drill bit came off the drill and fell down into a small hole in my brick base. Forget it man, it's just gone! Hopefully that will be sufficient for the whole project.

Nate,

This looks familar, well on your way. You might want to consider some bracing mid point each side. A scrap 2x4 will do, better than a blow out during the pour, cheap insurance. Keep on truckin..........
