Re: Vermiculite board as floor insulation
Hi
Thanks for all the replys
I contacted a oven specialist, and it is possible to use vermiculite board as floor insulation.
His suggestion was, 1" of vermiculite board on top of 2" leca blocks, that should be sufficient and much cheaper then fb board.
Hej Ulrik you are more then velcome to contact me I have prices from many of the dealers in Denmark and some good ideas where to by what.
my number is 24450966
thanks Jesper

Re: Vermiculite board as floor insulation
I see that you are from Denmark. I am planning a build here and have started searching for places to buy materials etc.
Is it because you cannot find the FB board in Denmark, and are looking for substitutes??
This place sells the ceramic fiber blanket (Insulfrax, similar to FB blanket). Maybe they also sell FB board? I have not enquired about prices yet. If you contact them, I would be very interested in prices ;-)

I used a 1" vermiculite board over 4 or 5" of vermicrete - with a thin layer of sand mixed with fireclay to level it. So far I haven't had any problems but it is exremely brittle while you are handling it and will break like a biscuit (read cookie) - but once in place it seems to sit OK. I finally trimmed the corners off last week while doing the stucco finish on the dome. I'd say the ceramic board is more efficient - and I intended to use that but couldn't find any here at the time.
good luck
Aidan

Re: Vermiculite board as floor insulation
Vermiculite board is a pretty old-fashioned material in the states. Jewelers used to use it as a soldering board. I think (this is just a guess) that the binder is waterglass: there's nothing concrete like about the stuff. It should work fine, but I think you will need more than two inches. It's not as effective as cal-sil or mineral fiber board.

Re: Vermiculite board as floor insulation
I don't think that one has been done before, but it could possibly work. The manufactured Vermiculite board will be better than Vermicrete, but i'd say you'd be better trying to find the Tech Spec and then making your own informed decision based upon Temp ratings, U values, etc.
Please post any information you find, as it will always lead to furthering of knowledge!
Ciao!

Re: Vermiculite board as floor insulation
Five inches for vermiculite insulation. The "board" would be a cast of vermiculate and portland cement. My insulating layer looks a lot like a fat board.
