  • shape/strength of arch

I need to decide on a shape for the entry arch. I like the kind where the sides go up straight for about three bricks, then begin to arch. (segmented arch?) Is this significantly stronger, or less strong than a full semicircle arch, where the arch starts lower?
    Here's mine:

    Re: shape/strength of arch

If you buttress enough it's as strong as any other arch.

The difference between arches is how much lateral pressure they cause. Roughly speaking the less height the actual arch part has the more load it will pass to the walls either side of it.

      Jim,
A hemispherical arch inherently has less side thrust than arches with vertical sides. You may find a discussion on arch/vault geometry and strength here:

If you buttress either arch side thrust is not an issue.
