    Re: Help!! First course

As Les noted, there are a few AZ builders on the board. If you're in the Phoenix area, we can certainly give you some guidance. The mortar mix consistency is one of the trickier things. The amount if water you add tends to be seasonal.

I agree with Les on the kit. Not sure how it makes sense to ship pallets of brick. I talked to my local brickyard and asked them about putting together kits - they said they tried in the past and it didn't make sense even with no shipping. But I guess convenience is a big driver? I note that many builders who buy that kit later say they needed more bricks than what was included.

Here is a "kit" for a 42" low dome Neapolitan:

So it was pallets of brick? I thought it was a kit. Not sure why one would have brick shipped - quite a few builders in Arizona. The material is obviously available.

No need to mortar to the board. I'm a little confused. If you bought a kit there are no chains. Don't you have 3 pieces for the dome?

No - you need it to float. Did you notch the sand / clay? It helps a little to get them set.

Can I use mortar for the floor? I can't get the mixture right. Got two floor tiles laid with paste but the were unlevel and couldn't level them using pallet. Seems too sandy and don't have anymore clay

Use mortar. The paste mix is only for leveling the floor.

I am not sure that I have your question 100% right - but here's what you want to do:
    - lay the floor tiles on the sand/fireclay mix in order to get them level
    - lay the first course of bricks directly on the FB board. You don't need to mortar them to the board or use any of the leveling mixture. You only to mortar them to each other on the sides.

    Help!! First course

I bought the 36" Pompeii kit, and have the insulated FB board down and the 18"x18" floor tile cutout to the 36". So the cooking floor will be inside the oven dome. The plans say to lay floor tile to the fb board with the paste 1 part fine sand 1 part fire clay. The question is do I use same paste for dome? Or do I use fire mortar? And do I also lay first course of brick directly on the fb board?
Working...
