  • Which insulation to use in insulated door

Im building/welding the insulated door tomorrow, i have both Cal-Sil boards and Ceramic fiber blankets. Both are left over and can use both. Which will insulate better?

Some facts. The Cal-sil board is rated up to 1,200F, the CF blanket is rated over 2,200F. The blanket can be packed tighter as it will compress.

What do you guys think? Thanks

My vote is for Ceramic blanket. Easier to work with.

I hope we can finish the door tomorrow so i can put some use to it. Last night i fired the oven, after finishing with the fire i blocked out the entry with bricks, in the morning i removed the bricks and the oven was still warm. Mind you i only fired the oven to 400F (at its peak). So im sure with the insulated door i will get better performance.

about the thickness of nickle. enough? i figure im not going to have the door on when i have a blazing fire therefore dont need to have a heavy duty door.

you need to put the door on with a pretty hot fire if you want the oven to be hot in the morning. I stoke mine up and then put the door on so it will be 600-650 in the morning.

I used a sandwich of foamglas between 1/8" metal and 3/4" ipe wood. The ipe made it too heavy and I will make another with a lighter wood. But I have put this door on when the oven was still 650-700 degrees F and is has been fine for almost two years.

When you put the door on don't you kill the live fire by starving it of oxygen?

DANGER_DANGER You would definitely be starving it from oxygen until you opened the door and got a first hand back draft experience. DANGER _ DANGER Never put a door on an oven with a fire going on inside! Unless you need to try to smother it and plan on not removing the door for a day or so.
I put my door on for the night after the fire is out and there are some hot coals only. Then I do not open it until the next day for bread baking. Typical temp is 700 F at night and 650 F in the morning. Some of that heat is from the still smoldering coals which still burn ever so slowly during the night leaving almost no ash in the am.
                      Everyone please be careful
                      Thanks
                      John

                          Hi V-wiz,
I am not implying you personally or others don't know the dangers of back draft, but since many people read these posts from all walks of life. Before this site I never did any masonry work and didn't have a clue how caustic lime can be on the hands and myself and my hands are glad I learned from being taught on this site with warnings and great information.

                          sorry if I offended anyone.
                          John
