  • Fabricated my insulated door.

We built the insulated door to the oven. Using steel sheets,
4" of CF insulation and gate handles.
No bolts, all welded on. I still have to clean the steel and paint the outside
    (only) with
    high heat paint.
I plan on using a gasket of some sort but im not sure what, as im skeptical
    about ceramic fiber stove ropes,
the fibers are very loose and the package clearly states to not go near food.
I was thinking of using gas oven door gasket ropes, anyone know what the
    temp rating is on that?

    Anyways here are the photos.

Your build is looking great! I will be interested to hear how hot the outside of the door gets.

                  Re: Fabricated my insulated door.

My door is 4 inches of ceramic fiber board wrapped in thin aluminum sheet metal attached to a piece of plywood (on the outside). I initially propped it up against the oven opening (which is rimmed by a flat 1 1/2 in lip of brick) with a brick. No gasket. I recently put metal handles on a nice piece of wood and adhered to the outside (plywood) of the door with 600 degree silicone. Now no brick prop is needed.
The oven seals well enough to extinguish embers, and is generally 550 F the next morning after pizza and drops about 100 F each day after that - quicker if the oven is used to bake / cook. I haven't though I needed an additional seal.

                    Re: Fabricated my insulated door.

Thanks for the info, my door is tight also, however ive got lots of extra gas oven door rope gasket which is not loose fibers, id like to use this but i dont know what the temp rating is, and apparently neither does the manufacture.

                        Re: Fabricated my insulated door.

According to the Internet, a self-cleaning oven can get over 900* f. I would think the gasket would be rated to handle that temp. Just a guess.

Its funny how i cant find any info on this on the net

Does it not bother anyone else how the Fiber ropes let out fibers and are so loose? This is not good for food laying around in the oven?
