  • Pompeii hearth

I am new to this forum as well as being new to building pizza ovens. I have been reading through the instructions for building the Pompeii and the first thing I noticed is when you frame up for the hearth, the plywood only covers the opening, not the concrete blocks. I understand this is the way it is supposed to be, but does that then mean that I have to fill all of those concrete block openings with concrete? I know some were filled in the initial wall build, but the others are still open. Please let me know if this is the case or is there something I am missing on this.
    Thanks.

    Duxer,

You do not have to fill every down cell completely full. It is recommended every corner down cell get filled and at least one in the center of each wall. Another thing you may want to consider is to run a bond beam course for the top course. All that means is you use "knock out" or header blocks for your top course. This will tie everything together. I have attached a picture to help explain. As for the cells you do not want to fill, they do sell plates you can put over them or you can fill them with gravel, busted up block or some folks will just shove the empty concrete mix bag down in there. The second picture is the walls for my pizza oven, every place you see rebar is a down cell that was poured solid. Hope the helps.

      G'day
Those empty cells can be used to hide empty bottles and beer cans topped with the crushed down cartons ... A bit of a time capsule ...

Sorry I'm still missing my Lunkin 8 mtr tape metric to the right imperial on the left . As worn as it was it was an old friend .
It just broke.... I miss it.
I still think in imperial in some things but live in a metric world.
Goggle is simple, but you miss the simply of just seeing it there

                  Re: Pompeii hearth

Cobblerdave...now I understand why you "measure twice and cut once...." You measure both in imperial and in metric.

I live in a world somewhere between academia and industry, where I use both the imperial system and the metric systems. Academia (i.e. eggheads) can only think in metric....industry (i.e. the real world) uses the Imperial system (which l still call the English system...eventhough the English use the Metric system.

What is really messed up is the Petroleum natural gas industry. They use a hybrid of the two...

                  Sorry, got off-topic.....

                    Re: Pompeii hearth

Things don't change 50 or so years ago on my first day working for my father. On a building site I dropped the only scaffold spanner down the core of the block wall. He took the cost from my meagre first weeks pay.
