  • Chimney size

I have just finished the dome of the 36" Pompeii and am waiting for my bricklayer to come finish the outside. I have been running some heats in it over the past few days and found a lot of the smoke comes out the front rather than up the chimney opening so placed the pipe on temporarily [6" x 36"] but , while a lot of smoke goes up the chimney a lot still comes out the opening. Trying to partly block the opening just starves the fire. is my chimney too small diameter? Need to correct before it gets bricked in. If this was built in my house I would be in a terrible mess!

Some photos would help, especially of the vent opening and throat area. Also, what size is your oven opening and height of dome? Alot of times, it takes the chimney actually being installed and warmed up to get the draw going well. In theory though, a 6" pipe should work ok for a 36". Also, in general, the taller a chimney is, the better the draw. I agree, it is a good idea to get it all rectified before the mason bricks it in. Try lighting a fire directly under the chimney opening, letting it get good and hot, then scoot your fire back into the oven for awhile and see if having the pipe warmed up helps any. Just an idea.

Definetly need to know the throat dimension, door height and dome height. Although a warm flue will draw much better, you should not have that much smoke coming out of the front. I have run my oven for a couple of years now and the front does not have any smoke/creosote stains. I used a clay flue that is only a couple of feet tall. Top down burn would help reduce the smoke in the first place, but I don't bother with a slow top down burn. I light'er up and away to pizza land.

Most new ovens are smoky until they're properly dried out.

The dimensions are 19" wide by 12" high at top of an arch as described in the instructions plus a reveal of approximately 3/4" to 1" around sides and top. The depth of the entrance is 1 1/2 bricks so about 14", also arched to follow the oven entrance. I have built 4-5 fires with the temperature getting to average 500 degrees F. I am suspicious of the moisture yet as I have laid 1 layer of 2' ceramic batt and cover it at night with a tarp, finding it a bit damp in the morning. can do pics in a day or 2 as busy this weekend. Re: Chimney size

Also- I do light the fire in the entrance and push it in plus I do get a good draw in the chimney- just seems to be excessive smoke leaving the opening even after fire is well established- maybe it does just need time to dry
