Re: How hot does entrance hearth get

    Les

As Ken says it is not that critical a deal. For me, I just wanted to decrease the heat of the landing enough so to make things more comfortable/safer while working the oven. You see I am just a bit clumsy. I can put my hand on the outside end of the entry and while uncomfortably hot, it is not hot enough to burn me. A minor side benefit is increasing the effeciency of heat retention.

        Hey all,

I'm not sure why you would want to insulate the landing from the floor. It gets hot on the inner part of the landing, as a number of folks have noted (around 400ºF+), and not that hot on the outer edge of the landing and vent/arch. Of course that's not even close to the pizza heat you have inside the oven.

With the temperatures you see around the vent landing, you can use standard mortar for construction, and you don't really have to worry about safety, any more than you would for a fireplace.

I'm thinking this is one of those areas where you can keep it simple.

        Whadya think?

            Well James,

You see, it's raining outside. So instead of being outside building, we are sitting inside... obsessing. Wondering what tiny bit of minutia we have forgotten that will doom our ovens into being decorative piles of brick and mortar that won't be fit to bake a Pillsbury Crescent roll.

I'm praying for good weather tomorrow so I can get away from this computer and back to the bricks.

              LOL.

One thing, though. You can't bake a Pillsbury Crescent roll. All the additives in the "dough" will burn, and everyone in the neighborhood will smell it. :-)

"Dough" in parentheses. Now that's funny.

Re: How hot does entrance hearth get

Thought I'd dig up this old thread, because of an interesting observation I made today (well, I think its interesting, anyway...)

After building my second big fire today and letting it burn down somewhat, I closed the oven entry with my super thick wood oven door. An hour later, the entrance hearth was cool to the touch on one side of the door, and still boiling hot on the other.

Now I would have expected the floor bricks outside the door to suck up some of the heat from inside and be warmer... well, maybe they do and then cool down again really fast. I dunno, I just found that unexpected (and pretty cool)...
"Building a Brick oven is the most fun anyone can have by themselves." (Terry Pratchett... slightly amended)
