  • Is it okay to make the insulating hearth 5 or 6" thick?

    Gang,

    Quick question:

I want to raise my hearth up a bit. I don't think so but would there be any issues with making the vermiculite/portland cement layer 5 or 6 inches thick vs the recommended 4?

(Also, I scored about 35 "red" firebricks that I"m going to use on a few rings much like another builder).

    Thanks
    Dick

It's not only OK, it's a good idea. The thicker your insulation, the better.
    Go for it.

      James,

Thanks. That's what I thought - only concern was the thickness since most seem mention it's a strange looking mixture when you pour it.

Does the offer to let me know where you found the FB still stand? I"m looking for a woodcut pizza oven image for my homebrew lable - personal use only of course.

      Thanks
      Dick
