DYI Refractory Mortar Sand

Can someone please tell me what the spec's are on the best sand to use for mixing up 3:1:1:1? Is "pool sand" the correct type?

Hi Vee!

I can't say I've used the home-brew mix - but I understand that clay/firebrick "sand" dust is the best to mix for the brew.
After cuts for the floor and first course - you could have enough to make your own - or, of course, buy the fire clay in bags.
