  • Lime as mortar in Italy

On recent trips to southern Italy, I noticed many pizza ovens that were built using "calcio"as mortar (I was told that it translates to calcium or LIME ). Many years later they are still standing and functioning for bread baking.
Is it possible that this "calcio" is ordinary LIME available at local masonary supplies?
    Thanks!

Here is a link to an earlier thread about lime mortar and wood ovens!
