Thank you all for the great advice on this forum. I am now the proud owner of a block stand and a poured concrete hearth. Now looking forward to sourcing some firebricks and mortar (any clues for where to get these in England would be appreciated).

John, I can recommend Midland Refractories Ltd, West Bromwich, if you google for them you will et their full address and telephone number, email is sales@midref.com

I bought all my materials from them firebricks, fireclay and insulation blanket, they were very helpful.
