Drake's 38" Oven

I see. Thanks for that. I like the lines -- both vertical and horizontal. It has a nice movement to it, so it doesn't appear too big, static or monolithic. The internal frame and modern chimney are completely hidden behind stone.

What is the slope of the main enclosure?

I am very happy with the way that it came out, but it is pretty massive.

For the chimney, I basically put the duratech on top of my cast vent, then I framed up around that with metal studs and enclosed that in durock
You can get an idea (before the duratech was installed) here:


The landing and the trim pieces are all cast concrete that I ordered. There is an arch over the opening that will be cast concrete as well...it broke during shippment.

It is time for a party, but I am heading to Italy for 2.5 weeks in a week or so...

Wow. You must feel great about how the enclosure looks. Substantial, but not too massive. A good-looking mix of materials and excellent lines.

Can I ask about how you finished the chimney? How did that come together? I sounds like the modernn DuraTech chimney, completely hidden. Nice.

Also, what material did you use for the landing. I can't tell.

Now, you get to put some soot on the opening. Time for a party.

Hi Fio,

That is a rock veneer that came with "Corners". The one I used is a real stone that is cut into veneer and veneer corners. I think that most rock veneer (real or manufactured, will have corners available...

What is that piece of faux rock in the corner; is there a name for it (not the product brand name, but the piece itself; is it a corner veneer, or what?) and where can I get one? I need just that exact same thing.

I have not lit the oven since they finished. Though it looks small, the area of opening there is 66 square inched, which is more than the approx 50" area of the 8" duratech fluepipe, so it should be fine. That said, I did not have them mortar the capstone on the vent, so if I need to raise it, I can.

Drake, I had been wondering about your progress the past few days as I've been toiling with stucco. Seeing a finished oven in your yard has to be some consolation for letting someone else handle your "baby" (that's a big baby). It really looks great. I especially like the chimney cap - does it vent well still? It looks like a small opening relative to what I imagine your flu size. Congratulations.

The brick is on!

Hi All,

I had some masons come this weekend (and today) to put the finishing stone work on the outside of my monument to pizza.

They did everything execpt the decorative arch for the front, which broke during shippment.

I used three different stone products
1) Thinbrick, which is a slice of real brick. Basically a brick veneer. It is self supporting.
2) Thinrock, again a slice of real rock and self supporting.
3) Cast concrete trim

I spent a fortune on these materials, but it was the only way I could get my wife to let me build it...make it good looking on the outside...

I am way stressed out from having someone else handle my baby here, but they got it done so much faster than I could have.

First, I put a rubber pond liner on the roof. Then they attached wire all over the structure, then spread a mortar on top of that. Then began and attaching the brick and rock...

Oh my gosh!

I thought it was a 38 inch oven, I see now that it's 38 foot! Those firebricks must have weighed 200 pounds each.

It looks like you sealed the inside of your box with spray foam. I wish I had thought of that.

My plan for a cheap chimney cap is to use a flu liner cut with a masonry blade at about my roof angle to yield an arched piece with an opening in front and back - smaller opening in the back and the slope will direct rain back onto my (yet to be applied) roof. With your design a nonsloping cut of a flu liner might look good. Insert a flat 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch noncorrosive metal mesh for a spark arrestor.

Hi All,

I got the cement board on the frame. It looks really really HUGE! I still need to get a chimney cap of some sort on. Right now I have a piece of cement board over the chimney.
