Mortar Joint Application

My arches, backwall, and other brick joints are very small, a perfect dry fit almost. Could one use a very small notched trowel to evenly apply the refractory mortar to these joints? or is the pattern left in the mortar troublesome?

You want a full bed of mortar. Make your mortar loose (wet) and spread it evenly.
