Somethings been bothering me for a while!!

When building a fire brick domed oven why are they called "chains" when in fact they are courses?
The English language was invented by people who couldnt spell.

"Curing" is another one that bothers me. We refer to the process of holding in moisture so chemical hydration will harden concrete, but also use the term when driving the moisture out, when drying the oven.

Both comments are good observations. Any WFO history buffs out there?? Perhaps it is as simple as "regional jargon."

"Chains" is not a masonry term, it is just a layman's term for course.

You cure the cement, then you cure the oven (as a whole). You don't cure ham the same way you cure a cold.
