Work out your brick bond before you start.
I have seen so many ovens visually ruined with bad brick bond.
Before you start make sure your bond works, having halfs in the middle of a wall or oven is not a good look.

And if you DO manage to work yourself into a spot needing a half in the bond, it is much better to cut 2ea 3/4 brick to span the gap.

Ain't that the truth. If you are working with 8" (7.5 + .5) bricks, your outside dimensions should be divisible by 8.

See those weird half bricks in the center, and the elaborate inset to disguise the problem? 60 isn't divisible by 8

Great advice! I had to cut EVERY brick on this wall except the bottom coarse. I came out on day two after the mortar had sat and didn't feel like knocking them out. A total rookie mistake that started when I cut the block.

There is a display house just down the road from here and the bricklayers didnt work out their bond, they have 6 3/4 cuts over a lintel right in front of the front door.
You would see it every day, it would drive me nuts.

Its a display house, its supposed to show your best work.

I had to copy it from the original post. If you select the thumbnail you can view it large. It's kind of wierd because sometimes it goes large then it shrinks back. At any rate - here is the page

Oz - you should see the workmanship on my home. Not so much the cuts (breaks), they just didn't give a damn about cleaning the mortar off.

Sound advice.....it doesn't take much working out either. Can't really avoid the cuts when your corbelling out with stacks or pillars like I built here.....

....but even over the window on the main house....it had to work bond (even if you can't see it.)

I just measure most times as everything here is metric it just makes it so much easier to get the calc out.
Bricks here are 230mm, 240mm with joint, it cant get any easier.

Here is that display house I said about earlier with the cuts over the front entrance, its 4 not 6, but still, work it out before hand.

                        Brickie in Oz

Just surfing the forum and re-found this thread of yours. Since posting in this thread I've built another oven and your title "Work out your brick bond before you start" was very important to me in making sure full bricks were laid over a wall containing 3 arches.....

                        setting out the bond.....

resulting in full brick bond over the arches..

Hope you don't mind me posting this as it may help people understand the importance of this thread title.

A hint: if you are using 8" bricks (7.5+.5), make sure the size of your structure is divisible by 8. For example 5 feet (sixty inches) isn't divisible by eight.

Nice work, and you even worked out for the arches NOT to have a split over them, a true professional..

                              Hello Al

I appreciated your kind words. I have visited your website on many occasions but I've only just read the entirety of your 2nd oven build. Never mind the fancy arches....That's one sexy beast you have built there.
