  • Mortar Question

I'm getting ready to build the oven opening, vent and decorative arch. Do I need to use the high refractory mortar for all parts (opening, vent & arch)? I was thinking I could use standard mortar for the decorative arch as it shouldn't get exposed to that much heat. I would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks

    Re: Mortar Question

I used refractory mortar on the entry arch and regular mortar on the facade at the very front. My entry arch heats to 350-400 F at the top and less on the sides (we have a heat brake between the entry arch and inner arch).

      Re: Mortar Question

I also have a heat break between my decorative arch and the entry.you can hold your hand against the decorative arch, so normal mortar is ok.without an insulating gap I'm Not sure how hot it would get, but you could use 50% Portland, 50% lime in the mix to give you a more heatproof mortar.
