When I was building my dome, I would sneak in a course or two between rainstorms. To keep my tarp shedding water, I suspended a piece of 2x over the top to support the tarp. One day I didn't take the support down before I started work... I was amazed at how much better my back felt, having something to rest a hand on while leaning over the dome .
It kept the center clear for my Indispensable Tool, and also provided a handy place to set the next few bricks or (carefully) my mortar pot. As the weather got cooler, I set up foam walls and a roof below the rail, with a work light in the dome.
