Wood fired pizza oven causes $20,000 damage!

I heard on the news today of an Adelaide wood fired oven that caused $20,000 damage to a fence and neighbour's property when the discarded coals and ash reignited, burned a brush fence and set a neigbour's house on fire.
There is a message somewhere buried in there, BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THOSE DISCARDED HOT COALS AND ASH!
I am very aware of the problem and place them into a steel bin and immediately doused with water. You only need to do this if you have some breads to bake without the fire within.
I just hope that it wasn't one of our forum members as I have 34 members residing in Adelaide.

Hi Neil,

I agree. If I?m going to bake bread I will put the coals in a galvanised bin and douse with water. Otherwise I will leave then in the oven and use the coals for retained heat cooking for a couple of days after the initial firing.

That is what I was thinking

I lost a friend to fire in his house because he put fireplace ashes in a paper bag.....

We put coals from the fireplace and WFO in a metal container with an air tight lid.

Bloody hell! Glad I've got a large well insulated ash slot I can scrape the coals into directly...

Yep those hot coals stay dangerous for days in the insulation of the ash.
Heard off... from a neighbour of some one who placed 2 day old ash in his bin and it flashed up and burn't his bin out. I use a number of 20 ltr steel drums and leave it for weeks before I empty them out... in the gardens.

If you separate the coals from the ashes, and remove fresh air, they go out quickly, plus you get free charcoal.

Or you can just shovel the coals into your Weber (or other covered grill) and close it up.

Definaltly need to be careful. I do the same as Neil and put them into a metal bucket then fill the bucket with water. It then goes out onto the lawn or vegie graden, or dried out and charcoal reused back in the oven.
