  • Laying brick on insulation board

Help. I am ready to lay my bricks down on my 2" insulation board and need the group's help. What do I put own between the two surfaces to assure a good level? Wet or dry mix of 1:1 clay sand?

    hey mario
    Welcome
I used straight fireclay and misted water from a hand sprayer to settle after i leveled the fireclay for both below the insulation board and above the insulation board below the oven floor. If you dont have fireclay, use fine sand.

Thanks for the response. My insulation board seems to be sucking up the moisture from the mix. Tried dry clay-sand mix. No success in leveling it. Trying fiberboard above the insulation board before the bricks go on. Tested the fiberboard with a torch. Excellent insulator. Comments? Thanks or your time.

be sure that fiberboard is the same characteristic as the insulation board.

I don't think that you really need it. You don't need the dry fireclay layer to be perfect, just a layer so you can set your floor and be able to make minor adjustments to get smooth cooking surface. You only need 1/8" to 3/16" layer of fireclay if the insulation board is flat. You may have to add screed boards on either side of your insulation board to provide a guide to level the fireclay. Just remember, the surface you are working to get smooth is the brick floor, not the fireclay. It is there to give you a way to make minor adjustments to the bricks only. HTH

          Gudday
Spread a thin layer of ordinary margarine from kitchen it stops the insulation from sucking the moisture out of your sand / clay slurrie.

Now, take your hand, place it behind the fiber board, then take your torch and fire the fiber board in front of your hand. How great is it now as an insulation?

I used dry silica sand on top of my FB board as a leveling agent.
I then used aluminum foil around the floor to prevent the FB Board from getting wet, as they warn against.

              It seemed to work well.
I was mostly worried about keeping the FB Board dry.

You can see how i did it here:
