  • Never, Ever do this!!

    Folks,
I was putting together a perfectly respectable WFO in a quiet country setting. Almost done. Just a subdued, sandstone-effect (Ulurish, even) to complete the exercise.
    So what happens?
I go into town. Upon return, there's me flamin Dog with a huge grin all over her ugly mug, and ochre all over her flamin tail; proud as punch she was.....and then I saw the oven! OH S...!
(Next thing ther'll be big black dog tracks over the bloody thing!)
    Man's best friend indeed.
    Crap.
And you know what really hurts? She types faster than me, but that mongrel left ochre all over the keyboard.
    Bloody she-dogs, eh.
    Bitch indeed.
Thanks for listening. I do feel better, but any/all counselling appreciated.
    I remain The Bitche's Servant,
    Idiot Jeff.
ps. out of the loop for a day or three.Stay safe you mob. teach.

Oh Jeff, sincere condolences! We have been very slow to replace our beloved pet that died 3 years ago......we like not having dog hair all round. But lets talk about the oven....high marks to you. I like your rotisserie idea next to it as well. I had only seen the close up of that. As we would say in the South, "Thats so pretty it would make you wanna slap yer mama." You have certainly given me some words to look up like Luddite and Uluru so I though I would reciprocate with some Southern phrases.

Our seven month lab is leading our "mature" lab astray. They've been getting out of your yard through a hole in the fence (remember the tree that fell in the storm?) and running down to the ocean -- across a pretty fast road. I think they've been in just about every home in the neighborhood, and it was getting pretty embarrassing having them brought back all the time.

So, I put an electric fence with shock collars. So far, so good.

Jeff, ecellente oven painting. Would you say -- good on ya? Well done in British. We said buon lavoro to a little girl in a restaurant once, and her parents couldn't help but laugh out loud. Clearly, "good job" doesn't translate into Italian.

Ah. As the proud owner of 2 1/2 labs, (we don't know what the other half is), I can tell you you won't ever own your couch again. But they're so happy to see you when you get home! Every time!

I'm off to a horse show this weekend, but I'll be planning my oven in between holding my daughter's horse, shoes, boots, saddles, etc. etc. etc. I almost have the whole thing laid out in my head. Now on to paper. (is is bad to dream about the thing?)

Nice work Jeffy - uh, Jessie. Pretty cosmic view of the universe on the side of that dome!

I thought labs were somewhat smart. Mine's as dumb as a rock. Anyone with food is his master. Sure will miss him after he runs away again! (tomorrow) Here's bubba (Bear).

                    Jeff,
I love your artwork on the oven. What was your technique for its application ?

                      Re: Never, Ever do this!!

Dave it was a 3" house paint brush and sand/grout mix applied as a thin "paste"/slurry, just for the heck of it.

Insanity has set in, and colour is entering my life. Bought a $2 set of art brushes, and using acrylic paints, (both plain and mixed with grout) to spice things up a bit. Wife is egging me on. (I think she is trying to get me committed. Ha! Fat chance! I can work around shrinks!)

Mate the back verandah is a giant dog's brekkie: arched Jap-style bridge over The Swamp (fish pond),Indonesian stone carvings, Italian oven. And now an idiot's graffiti (grafitti?), along with the dog's dinner. Hmmm. Maybe the evidence would favour the Shrink.hahahahahaha (maniacal)

As I said to Liz yesterday, the whole shebang will probably end up an attractive shade of Concrete Grey.
So do I look worried? The tucker is just plain other-worldly.
                      Onya Dave.

                        Re: Never, Ever do this!!

Ok Jeff, you asked for it.... (you did too!)

So, when I first saw this oven in its painted condition it had more dark brown on it - dark and light pretty much in equal parts, with a strong swirling pattern. Well the swirling pattern is still there in this thread, still very cool, but more light in it now. (What does it look like in the meantime I wonder?)

And I thought, If this were my oven (which it isn't) I would put ochre coloured swirly bits on it. Or something.

The idea would be to keep the impressive dark-light pattern from a distance, but to soften it a bit from close up, give the eye a bit of detail to look at, specially right on the edges between light and dark.

I've tried to sketch what I mean, with different kinds of patterns - but alas, only using childrens pens, and with a very high tech way of making it computer compatible....

I'll also post a picture of some ivy I once painted on a wall to ilustrate the point. When I'd finished with the dark green and added the leaves it looked really crap and I was going Ohmygoshwahthaveidone??!! But once all the light green twirly bits were on there it started to look a lot better - the little details distract from the lousy paint work.

Not that I think your paintwork is lousy!!! OK? But if you and your dog are looking for more painting to do this is what I'd suggest...

Thanks Frances. As you can see, the mangy mutt has been at it again.
I thought we had an understanding that dot-work along the lines of Aboriginal art was to be the next step. Woke up this morning to a shocking site! Might have to get an electric collar (as mentioned by James) so she gets a boot as soon as she picks up a paint brush.
Sorry, will have to post image separately.
