I recently did my first cast dome using the sandcastle method. It was a large oven, 44”. I had several issues with the sides crumbling. I was attempting a vertical side of about 6” and then an arch to the top of the dome. After the 3rd cave in I started over and made the first layer about 5” high and shaped to my dome plan. I then covered the sand with a layer of window screen trimming it right to the edge. Then another 7” of sand shaped and another layer of screen. 4 layers of screen with sand in between shaping as I went up and it was rock solid...no more issues at all. Just thought I would share in case anyone has the same problem.
