Garden sprayer to spray a fine mist to cut down on dust and keep the blade and brick wet. Soak the bricks of course. And Hubby (Glenn) added a dog "cone of shame" to further protect the motor from dust. Don't have a picture at the moment but will post one later. Also had a bit of left over vermicrete so dumped it into Chinese food containers to make mini bricks splits. Thought I might use them in a door???
I've been thinking of adding some beer bottles to the out side of the done between the blanket layer and the perlcrete vermicrete layer. They should provide voids which will be great insulation. I've seen houses built with this incorporated before.
Going hunting today for an old Pyrex pie dish. I love these door people have made with the windows. Going to give making one of those a go they look awesome.
Also wanted to say thanks to whom ever it was that posted the drawing of the brick cut in three for the dome. We did a test run an it looks like it will work for our dome. If anyone knows who originally posted pleased let me know I can't find the post.

Love that saw set up , done your research well , but see how it works, if it still proves to be be dusty, a respirator is the final defense.
You planning to use ceramic blanket and pearlcrete .. Great they are very efficient. The glass bottles however ... Well they are retrospective step if you using more efficient methods.
50 mm of ceramic board or blanket or equal (roughly) to 100 mm of pealite cement or vermiculite cement, or if you like, a combination works.
Although you can't have to much insulation they say.

Hey Dave, ear and eye protection already in use for the whole family. So far the dust has not been too bad but only cut a couple of bricks.

The insulating collar is set so the main floor is going down. Hubby is just laying and cleaning up the bricks. I'm cleaning up the tiles for the actual cooking floor. Man are they heavy.

              Re: Bathurst Build 100cm ish

So I thought I would spread a great idea we had.
First one was to use fancy version of blocks which means we don't need to render. These actually ended up cheaper than the plain grey and are of a better quality.
Secondly we paid for our slab concrete to be delivered also cheaper than doing it ourselves and got them to colour it. Then we asked them if they ever had a bit left over on other jobs and would they bring that round for filling the blocks. Well yes they often did. And yes they did and even better they gave it to us for free. Always worth asking especially when you only need a little bit. The end result is slightly more than every second core is filled with concrete. This stand isn't going anywhere soon. Oh yes and they had a half bag of colour left over from another job which is what was needed to colour ours so they chucked that in for free too. That was a happy day here.

is this it?.... Cool Id wished id known this one when I built
It will need to be buttressed, as all soldier courses do. 25 mm of mortar on the outside will do. Myself I like the idea of adding a coupla rows of barbed wire inbeded in the mortar like they do in mud brick houses for strength.
                  regards dave

Yep Dave that is the idea we are copying. They are looking good. Dry stacked the first part of the arch up as well also looks good. Feels like we are getting some where. Now if only it was not sooooo hot during the day we could get more done. Barbed wire ha ha that's cute. At this rate maybe just maybe we will be cooking by Australia Day. I live in hope

I will post some photos asap (thats code for with my wifes help)

Hi Marty nice to see someone else from around here building from scratch. Check out the alternative build section if you haven't already. It is a great forum isn't it. Are you using the better homes plan. That is where I started off. There are a few local suppliers. Don't forget insulation under the hearth and on top of the dome. Unless all you want is huge fire the a few pizzas.

                        Cheers,

Hi Rosemary I will check out the alternative build section ,I have been playing with the idea of using a LARGE terracotta pot upside down and then cobing over that .But I am having a few problems finding one with an internal measurement of 750mm +.So I think it my be the tried true method of a sand dome .I will keep looking till i start the stand then I will have to decide one way or another.I got the railway sleepers down and fixed in place today so tomorrow I will dig out ready for the decomposed granite to go in next week end .
                          cheers for now

                            Hi Marty,
how would you get the pot out if you could find one big enough? You could try the styrofoam box method then you don't need as much sand.
                            Cheers,

                              Hi Rosemary
My plane was/is to leave the pot as the liner of the oven ,I believe they will handle the high temps.I made a SMALL prototype out of a 200mm ish pot ,I cut an opening it with an angle grinder covered it with straight cob about 50mm or so then added another layer with straw in it .I let it dry out for a couple of weeks then I lit a fire in it ,I kept it burning for 4 hours with no problem. The cob went a bit crumbly but that is easy fixed with a few more test bricks.I will see if I can post a photo or two
                              cheers for now

My uncle used to use use a pot cut in half and stacked on itself in the blacksmiths hearth he used as a mini kiln . I'd pump the bellows and he would be always warn me not to go to hard as the pots would explode if pushed to hard. He only used them once , and never fired them a second time.
I have not known anyone to use one to date, and report success .
Myself I'd do my research carefully, I'll be wrong of course, but a straight clay dome is a lot more common and usable
