    Making progress. Inner and outer landing arches are complete (while maintaining a heat break between dome and chimney stack) and I am working toward a Dino Pizza style chimney transition.

      I am very near the last application of mortar to fire brick! (which is good since my last bag of mortar is getting light). Finishing up landing arch to Chimney transition - would have finished completely but too vigorous whack with the rubber mallet cracked one of the splits that will support the Chimney flange

          Hello FB community. You have helped me greatly thus far - I feel very small standing on the shoulders of Giants as I follow the work of many that have gone before.
          My next step is to secure the chimney plate to my structure. I know I need to allow for expansion of the Metal. Is there a recommend best practice at this juncture, I suspect if I drill holes to screw the flange down, I will crack blocks. Is it necessary to use a high temp "caulk" to get an acceptable seal?

            Timely topic, a few steps behind you so will be interested on what opinions are. I am especially interested on how to seal around the cirlcle in the firebrick after you put the chimney pipe on.

              My vent construction was almost exactly the same as yours.

              I used tapcon screws. They seem to have worked fine for the most part. I did manage to crack off the corner of one of the splits I had used on the top layer - but I think this was because it was too thin. It was not a structural issue, as the screw was held on the brick below. I just remortared in the broken corner, tightened the plate back down, and left it.

              I'd recommend using 2 1/2-3" screws, 1/4" or thinner so that you're not expanding too much into the brick. Stainless if you can find them.

              As for a seal, I used high temp caulk between the anchor plate and the vent. Same stuff I used for my heatbreak. A continuous bead under the plate. Have had zero smoke issues.

                  I just used mortar beneath the plate that connects my pipe to the vent, coupled with ss bolts. Haven't had any smoke leaks so far.

                    Waiting for Stainless steel tapcon screws and kaowool sealant to attach the chimney. Not one to be idle log, I am preparing to reinfoce my tall soldiers in the style of Brianventura

                    I also started curing - I started with some left over chafing fuel - the laser thermometer found their max temp around 350 degrees F - which suited me fine - bringing the oven up from ambient (which happens to be about 100 f today) very slowly. I transitioned to charcoal and by the end of the evening I had the inside of the top of the dome to about 250 F, the outside of the dome has not exceeded about 125 F

                    I also started on a first generation door. I used the plywood arch form then cut left over 2 inch fiber board and one thickness (1 inch) of fiber blanket to the same size. I bent a "casing" for the insulation from 8 inch aluminum flashing - I stapled to the wood and used 500 degree silicone to hold things together on the oven side - once dry tomorrow, I will post photos.

                      An interesting development.

                      While curing the oven (with charcoal so far) at low temperature there is an occasional puff of smoke that exits the dome between two bricks, two course down from the plug. As the oven heats up (and the bricks expand, or as less smoke is produced) the smoke decreases. I believe this defect is due to faulty mortar application - not a crack that occurred due to heat stress.

                      So when does a crack in the dome matter? Is this a call for some kind of patch ( I would probably have to make the gap bigger in order to get anything in that space) or is this the case where insulation covers a multitude of sins?

                      Thoughts?

                        Answered my own question reading previous threads .... moving on to insulation tomorrow. The oven did produce its first fruits - three one pound loaves of french bread - yum!

                            Stainless Tapcons and High temp moldable caulk both arrived today - Got the chimney installed (though I will note that no smoke leaked around the plate when is was just sitting there for the last few days secured by gravity). Insulation is installed - 3 inches of blanket all around with an extra 1 inch covering the top 75% of the dome.

                              Did you seal your heat break yet, or have you been firing with the gap open? I know I fired my oven a few times before I sealed mine up, and was surprised by how little smoke exited through the gap.

                              To your comment on my thread, I'm also interested in what temperature you see at your outer arch when you get the oven completely heated up.

                                I did fill the gap between the oven and the chimney arch right away with ceramic rope before the first fire. I had a lot, so I put in several strands. I got the dome to clear night before last - but every thing was cooling off quickly with no insulation. Looking forward to getting home tonight to light the first "insulated" fire. Tonight its Pizza! I will record the dome / arch temps and let you know.
