Re: New Build Oven At Granite Falls

Looks Delicious! I have had pretty good luck cooking right on the hearth stones - gives the crust some char. I does requires some practice prepping the pizza base to slide off the peel (w/o the toppings sliding off the base).

I only used the screen to deliver the pizza to the oven, flawless for the peel imparted. After a minute I life the edge with the peel and the pizza is already firm enough the slide onto the peel. Whip out the screen and then put the pizza (after a turn) right on the stones. Wonderful. Going to try a couple more tonight and try them on my neighbors.

Pizzas getting even better than the first. Now they are down to $750 a pizza. (Amortization based on WFO cost )

The next stage now that the oven is proven, and many awesome pizzas have passed from it's mouth to ours, is decoration. I want to do a seascape Mediterranean scene. Although tile is probably the norm, I'm thinking colored glass. Now it would take a bunch but recycling colored glass form wine bottles might be a good option. At least for the green underwater vegetation. Brown beer bottles for the sea floor. The problem comes with the amount of blues needed.

Try some of the commercial glass places. Most also do colored glass for churches etc. The one I went to had just about every color imaginable. I got a couple of broken drops for next to nothing. Aside from the color availability, the uniform thickness of the glass is a definite plus. Perfect for embedding in mosaics .

Sounds like a great media for creative juices. Will you use a light (white?) background behind then glass?

Yes, I'm using white thinset (like that used for setting tiles). Lets the light shine through or reflect the sun.

That's a good suggestion. I went to a glass specialist place in Seattle and bought glass rods to melt. Big mistake. The blue glass had lead in it and when it was melted it looked like lead instead of blue. Probably used too higher heat.

So different forms of glass use. The main background of blues I'm going to use the glass beads found in pet stores in the fish section. These glass beads have a flat bottom so perfectly lend themselves to the mosaic. Then glass bottles for forming the underwater vegetation. This I have to practice some more.

I created one fish using a piece of glass bottle heated and made flat and fish shaped (Luck more than skill.) Blob of red colored glass for the eye.

How did you heat a whole glass bottle to make it flat?

Sorry that was miss leading, I broke the bottle first then heated the pieces with a propane torch. Takes a little time but Oxy Acetylene I found to be too much heat too fast. Perfect heat I think would be propane and oxy, something I need to experiment with. I will also try building a small foundry using the left over fire bricks from the oven project.

Heating glass is an all new area for me.

Octopus getting glass mosaic, ran out before I could get him finished. Bought 7 pounds of the stuff and was shy by a good 3 pounds.

Notice the eyes....very cool when the sun hit's them.
