Re: The Badger Build
Frances,
Thanks!
Going with an igloo style. Hoping to put 2" of blanket and 3-4" of perlcrete this weekend.
Having trouble finding stucco... HD/Lowes don't carry it... They do carry a bunch of other products - what is similar that I can use???
Definitly want it to be waterproof! I was also planning on painting the dome as well.
Thanks
Dick

Re: The Badger Build
Lovely archway! What are you planning for the outside of the oven?

Re: The Badger Build
Badger, I put chicken wire lose. Not sure if it is the correct method, but it worked for me. I just had to push the perlcrete through the holes.

Re: The Badger Build
Mfiore,
I'll just build out about 6-8 inches... Given it will be a solid pour all the way around the oven and since I'm using rebar I should be okay... (i hope).
Not sure of the official way, but form them up and just push in the mortar vs trying to mortar/place each brick seemed to work out...

Re: The Badger Build
Looks great!! You've made some beautiful arches.
You've mentioned a cantilever before. How will that attach now? Looks like the decorative arch comes all the way to the front.

Re: The Badger Build
Thanks. I took back some today that had a little too much red to them... I think I get the muratic acid to get some of the haze off.
I actually bought my chimney sections at Lowes. I had them special order the cap and the mounting plate.
Hoping to install this weekend.
2 questions.
1) Should the chicken wire be tight over the blanket or lose to help hold the perlcrete.
2) Having trouble finding Stucco at Lowes/HD. What options do I have?
Thanks
Dick
Thanks

The Badger Build (Finished the Outside Arch)
Gang,
I took the day off to run a few errands (license renewal, take back some decorative bricks that were the wrong color) and work on the wfo.
Finished the front arch. I used a styrofoam form, made sure my bricks were set right and just started shoving mortar in. I waited an hour or two and took out the form.
Overall I'm pretty happy. I'll need to clean up the bricks a little so their brown color comes out.
4 total curing sessions 300-450 (total time of 11 hours). I want to do 1-2 more before I insulate.
Hoping to put the other blanket on this weekend and start the perlcrete!
Thanks

Re: The Badger Build
I love how you placed the front bricks straight.. then herringbone behind.
Now why didn't I think of that................

Re: The Badger Build
Asudavew,
Thanks - it looks different in person.
FYI - I put a halogen lamp in the oven to check for cracks. I've built up a lot of soot burning paper...
Anyway I didn't notice any cracked bricks. If anything I have some hairline cracks in the mortar joints. I guess I'll be able to tell once I take off the FB blanket.
Thanks
Dick

The Badger Build (Outside Arch)
Gang,
I decided not to do a fire today and work on the front sides of the outer arch. These are medium brown textured brick (not sure if I can or if I'll want to get rid of the extra mortar - I'll see how it looks). These will be exposed to the elements and I'll build a door to fit in the recessed area to keep moisture out. I'll then insulate behind the brick and tie everything into the arch like George did.
Again, defininetly not perfect. It's going to look "aritisan" that's for sure.
Thanks

Re: The Badger Build
Asudave - thanks. It's so covered in soot that I can't see anything. From what I've read I'm not concerned about cracsk as I know I'll get them. I just hope they aren't bad enough to cause structural problems/bricks falling out.
Cplain - no more "real" progess. We had a neighborhood garage sale today - we ended up in the red by about $20 - by buying items from our neighbors
.
I'm hoping to cure some more tomorrow - 350-400 range and maybe work on the front decorative arch.
Thanks
Dick
