  • Possibly frighteningly stupid question about chimney...

Should the door close off the chimney, or should the chimney be open with the door in place?

A related question is this... many designs feature a doorway arch and a second arch behind it with a slightly narrower diameter... this gives you a nice surface to put your door up against. Does it serve any other function (other than aesthetics?

I'm considering having an arch 22cm long (using 22cm firebrick) and then casting the entrance to the dome slightly narrower to achieve the same effect... is there any problem with this?

If you place the door in front if the throat opening, your oven will cool down rapidly. Place the door on the oven opening, before the inside line of the throat.

      Ok,

So with the oven door closed, there is effectively no chimney, right?

That is correct. The oven door should completely seal the oven chamber.

Doors are usually used after the fire is out and any glowing embers removed. Some folks may keep some hot embers inside for added warmth, however, with the door closed and the hot embers, the temperature will rise rapidly.

          Thanks for that.

How important is it to getting the chimney throat adapter correct? They're expensive to buy... looks like I'll have to try casting one.
