  • Stucco for clay flue tile

I've got my chimney in place with a clay flue tile chimney "smoke chamber" and now a 3' double stainless chimney mounted above that. My question is what to coat the clay flue tile liner with? Could I use a traditional stucco base coat or will high temps create a problem with cracking on stucco since it will not be insulated. Or should I make a wet stucco out of high temp mortar to act like a coating? I have left over blanket insulation and was also thinking about insulating the clay tile first. Ideas welcome!

If you don't insulate the clay flue tile it will crack.you can insulate it with blanket or vermicrete or both.

It might crack any way, but I have an 8 X 12 I have used for years and it is holding up just fine. Depends on how you abuse it.
