    And by the way, I like your signature. I've been looking at the outside of my oven, course by course, and boy, it's a good thing the blanket and vermicrete will hide a multitude of sins! Ugly breaking points and lumpy mortar.

    After proper mixing and air drying, heat stop 50 is non water soluble.

    Quote from the back of the bag. It does say it isn't waterproof, but non-water soluble means it won't run away like a sand castle when the tide comes in if it gets wet after drying.

    Doe's air-set mean it needs heat to harden?
    Like a kiln temp heat?

    Oh Man, I hate to jump in late here, but doesn't air set mortar mean that it continues to be able to be dissovled by water and therefore unsuitable for outdoor use?? I saw that it was a dry mix so did not think anything of it...usually the air-set mortars come premixed...

    Yeh that looks like a normal airsetting refractory mortar. If you need, "fatten' it up with sand but shouldnt need it. Sand would give it a bit more guts.

    Thanks guys! dmun i thought the same thing silica = sand, but you know how second thoughts are! And they never have mixing instruction! Ill post some pics in a bit, ive got three courses done and tommorrow i will figure out and assemble the door arch. I have come to see that the fire brick i got from work is probably medium duty brick, when i cut it open the density was far different than the brick i bought. Because they are tapered to begin with i thought i would use them on the last few courses. I hope they will be alright for oven use!
