I agree with Jim.
Where did you get that mix?

Re: Well i quess im building an oven!
Mortar mix ..... just add water
Mortar mix is sand and portland cement.....Refractory mortar mix is a specialized mix of sand and other ingredients....
...but if it comes as a mix, I think it's pre-prepared and you're good to go.

Re: Well i quess im building an oven!
I actually used newspaper strips to keep from mortaring mine down. I think it may need to expand, so I didn't want to keep it from doing so. Of course, this may not have been necessary at all, but it wasn't any extra work, really.

Fireandflames,
No need to mortar the soldier course to the floor. I actually did mortar the two bricks on the floor that made up my interior arch however but no need for the other ones. You will mortar them side by side just not to the floor.
Trust me, it's not going anywhere.

Re: Well i quess im building an oven!
I will be cutting no more than anyone else....actually less, i will be cutting the bricks in 0.50, 0.333, and 0.25 and by laying them on their side yields me more hight per course. Additionally the angles for the brick are really not that steep. I was thinking of buying a big ball from wallyworld to use as a form/support. I will try to build the forms for the hearth in the next two days.......more to come!Originally posted by dmun View PostJust a quick note: Cutting every brick is very labor intensive. Just a quick note: Cutting every brick is very labor intensive. No time saver there.I just looked at dmun's geodesic dome thread and a light came on. Less of everything, brick, morter, time.

less of everythin', but more time I'm sure!Originally posted by FIREANDFLAMES View PostI just looked at dmun's geodesic dome thread and a light came on. Less of everything, brick, morter, time. Im gonna build this the same basic way outlined in the plans but with the brick upright. I spent the last day working the angles for the dome and ill be cutting the bricks in half and in thirds and placing them on thier side, will make the work more efficient (in my mind anyway). The amount of mass ill save is tremendous, and my local hardware store has huge bags of vermiculite that has been there for years, i get at a steal
So this is the new plan for my dome. I think with the cheap vermiculite i can put on 8" on my dome so the thinner walls will have plenty of insulation!
Looking good and a nice thread to follow. I was not going to reinforce my slab but saw some chain link fence and will throw it in the hole under the oven area ( I read that the mesh does not stop the concrete from cracking, but keeps it together when it does) .
