  • open fire ban an issue with our outdoor ovens?

HI Wayne Bergman here. I live in an area that has a strict no open fire ban in place for our summer season. Our local fire chief is coming over tomorrow to look at my oven to see if it will be allowed to be used during the open fire ban. I am in British Columbia Canada. The local ban that I see referenced to on our Sechelt District web site seems to be referring to OPEN FIRES when making reference to the ban. I am a bit puzzled by this as my oven is dead safe and see no reason why I should not be able to use it even in the dry weather. I dont even start the fires with cedar like I do in the winter but go with all Alder for my fire wood so there is no popping in the cook chamber like you would get with the cedar start up.
I am wondering how other areas treat similar fire bans that seem to reference the term "Open Fire" for the ban. Are our ovens included in these open fire bans and or should they be?

When I built mine after the building inspector finished looking at the plans he forwarded them on to the fire chief and he said I was exempt from all fire bans because I had a proper ful and chimney. That it was a appliance not a fire pit or BBQ. I hope yours goes the same way. Good luck.

Be sure you have a spark arrestor in the chimney cap before you invite the chief. A lot of vent caps get sold without them.

Thanks guys. I am starting to see there are really two issues at play for the home builder. One is if your area has given an exemption from fire bans by recognizing our units as "cooking appliances" and separate from wood heaters or open fire regulations. That is one issue and so far I am in the clear in my area in this regard. But the second issue is the whole UL Certification that in Canada comes from TSSA. As a home builder I know my vent is Certified at the point of sale and all that but how would I get a UL Certificate for my whole oven as a complete unit. If I understand it right if you buy an oven from say Forno Bravo or Mugnaini it will come with the UL certification required. How about for the home builder what can do we do to get a UL Certification or is it really needed?
Oh here is a video recently made showing our oven in action. Its a real quick 2 minute video showing start up and cooking. The oven I built with a friend a few years ago https://vimeo.com/210180310

Thanks Utahbeehiver, not sure what happened to that link that is not working. I think the photo album has disapeared somehow. Here is another link https://photos.google.com/share/AF1Q...NtcnltMk5RWkFn that has some of my pizza builds shown. It is also a long album of misc projects of all kinds so you may need some patience scrolling through it if you are looking for pizza stuff. Also this link https://get.google.com/albumarchive/...WdhUDGCALiwyQQ shows a coupld of my builds that I have documented for sharing with other people that want to do a home build. I have saved these photos in this way on the last album for reference when sharing details on how build an oven if I ever get sharing with people on what to do. Its kind of all over the place as far as sequencing but it make sense when I go through it with someone more like in a tutorial setting.
