  • Clay / Terracotta Pipe for Flue

Hi, is it possible to use old school clay pipe as the flue? It's cheap as chips (comes up for free or AU$5 on Marketplace all the time) and comes in diameters typically around 5" - 6". See attached pic for reference as an example.

5" ok for ovens up to around 28" internal diameter (or equivalent chamber volume if not a hemisphere) 6" diam flue for ovens up to 36" and 8" for ovens over 36" otherwise, with a cross draft system (flue at the front) you'll get smoke issues. Also a clay flue needs to be insulated around the outside or it will crack.

      Thanks David,

I did think to cut a section away on two then joining them together to get a bigger dia. flue.

Cutting and joining could be difficult and problematic. How about just a double barrel flue. Another member did it that way a few years ago. Worked ok I think.

Yeah could do - the thing is since these are cheap they pretty much make for a cost effective flue and easy to insulate and brick up around it.
