I'm building the hearth stand as per the instructions for a Pompeii. I cannot find 3/8" 2x2 angle iron long enough to span the opening? The local home depot and Lowes have 1/8". There are 3/36", but only 48 inches long. Is the 1/8 inch thick enough if I put extra rebar in supporting hearth?

Re: Angle Iron size
I would keep looking - seems a little thin to me. The iron is supporting your opening block and the weight of the hearth (in that area). Have you tried the masonry yards? They usually carry steel as well.

Re: Angle Iron size
Hey Mike, I had the same problem! Here's the thread I started on the topic; you might find some good ideas in there:

I found some at the salvage yard, but maybe a local welder or metal fabricator would sell you some?
