I think the rule of thumb, to the extent that there is one, is that the area of the opening in the entry should be twice the area of the flue interior.

Six by nine isn't a standard flue size around here. What are you using?

Looks like a good product, but they all look round (cylindrical) to me. Did I misread something?

I cut the opening 6 x 9 and tappered it to 4 x 6 then i used the 6in circle chimney

Well today was a good day


DAY 4
There are zero cracks that i can see inside the oven
there are some hair line cracks on the skim coat that i put on after the 16 gauge chicken fence, this skim coat was about 3/4- 1 inch thick in some places.

I want to see what will happen tomorrow before i put the ceramic blankets on.

I am hoping that this will insure me of huge cracks later down the road

floor 486
Walls 539
outside 174

I think tomorrow i will try to fire it up to about 800-1000 on ceiling.

The heat tranfering from flame to bricks i feel is going well.

These are approx #

Roof is 850-975
Floor is 609-750
Walls at solider row 595-620
Outside 205-295
Under the oven 179

What do you all think of the #'s?

The Bricks in the last picture is just starting to glow. and you can just barely see them

I do have about a dozen or so Hairline cracks

I think these are from expanding brick and mortar???

I think I will start on 2-3" Blankets and alum foil and chicken wire and mortar and dryit after that

Chris - Before you wrap it up - bring it up to nuclear to see what happens. I think your approach is solid, so I don't expect any thing bad. Since this thing is destined for the road, I would start looking at cushioning the transport.

Chris, don't worry about the hairline cracks. You'll have lots of them; they are normal. The oven has to expand and contract a lot. I think the more small ones you have the better. Even the larger crack (when your oven is at it's hottest 7-800 deg and then one of those hairlines gets almost credit card thickness, it's still no big deal. It's not big enough to loose heat or smoke through the insulation blanket you'll wrap it in. Now that's worst case if it happens at all.

Well here is the last picture


And here is what I did

I have 3" of ceramic blankets then I have alum foil wrapped

Then I have Alum mesh

I am going to skim coat it in Mortar tomorrow

Well we put the skim coat over the metal mesh....then we coated it one more time

With the last coat we put fiber mesh in the concrete.

I set the front rock also I used a special high temp epoxy and drill holes in the brick so it will be structurelly strong and it will not fall off

OK Chris...when did that outer arch happen! It's absolutely beautiful! That stone is amazing. Great choice in stone material.
