Re: gt40's Pompeii Oven 42" build log
I just finished my first cord of wood and I wanted to give an update. I added some fiber blanket to the inside of the chimney on the outer wall. This made a big difference in exhaust flow and the oven is heating up a bit faster. I can get to 600F in about 45 minutes from a cold oven fired up so I am really happy about this. I believe the recirculating design of my chimney is definitely a plus. Retention of heat seems to be fine too. I am averaging 480f the next morning after cooking and it is still over 200 degrees the following night. This is with just a piece of wood on the outside of the oven for a door.
The draft is quite noticable when you build a big scary fire and it sucks fire right up the opening. Here is a pic where you can see the flames being pulled up the flue:
On another note, the rest of the outdoor kitchen is coming along and starting to take shape.
Found amazing deal on granite countertops: I got (2) 36" x 98" island ones for $285 each and he gave me a 36"x44" scap for another $50 for my island.
Here is everything so far:
thats it for nowLast edited by gt40; 08-30-2011, 05:40 AM.

GT40,
Great fire shots! Must be neat feeling to finally get your oven finished and cooking! With that dome I'll bet your oven cranks out outstanding pies. Keep the pics coming.

So far the oven is hitting my goals. This is a 49" oven and to have it clear the dome and hearth at this temp in just over an hour is awesome.
Got to run for now to make my first pizza for the wifey and me...
