Re: Pompeii Nate's 42" Oven Build

    Russell,

I was planning on doing just that. I just need to run to my wood pile at my in-laws and grab a few more boards (my wife and I tore down an old house a few summers ago and now have a good-sized pile of old wood and it has come in handy). I don't want anything to go wrong so bracing is a good insurance. Thanks for checking on me!

Once again, I agree with Russell; some bracing in the mid-span of your forms will prevent them from bowing out (though you may have thought of this already). I used a loop of chimney wire, then twisted a nail through the loop until it was taut.

Here are three pictures of the process.

And I have officially sacrificed/offered up my first piece of equipment when a drill bit came off the drill and fell down into a small hole in my brick base. Forget it man, it's just gone! Hopefully that will be sufficient for the whole project.

        Hey Nate,
Yea, i have a graveyard of tools around my oven too. Mainly pencils!
Just wondering if you are going to take those 2x4s out before you pour?

Re: Pompeii Nate's 42" Oven Build

          Hi Nate,
I was pretty nervous about bracing for the top slab so here is a pic of what I did for insuance (in pdf).

I drilled 2 holes at opposite ends of the top and bottom form, just big enough for the rebar wire I was using to go thru it and twisted the ends of it with a long bolt or 6" piece of rebar. Once you remove your forms, just cut the wire flush. This pulled the forms together from opposite ends. But if you have enough standard bracing boards, you should be fine.

Re: Pompeii Nate's 42" Oven Build

              Hey dvm,

I wish I could say I have made progress but I haven't even had a chance to touch my oven for at least the last three weeks. Life has just been so busy that I just havent had any time. I made some progress since the last pics of my build were posted but not much. I will have to get those pics up so it at least looks like I did something. I also have a neighbor who I kind of talked into building a WFO and he is well ahead of me so I get to live vicariously through his build while mine sits idle. I tried to get him to get on here and create a build thread but he hasn't.

Hopefully I will have something to share soon since my window of good weather is dwindling.

Thanks for remembering me and giving me a reason to press forward.

Hang in there Nate. The WFO will wait on you and won't ever complain. I think it is a conspiracy to interrupt quality time with ones oven that must be stopped. only the oven builder can hear the call from their oven.

The good news is that none of us are trying to make a living building these things.

Very true to both comments. But dvm if I can get it built AND figure out a way to make money off of it that would be a bonus in my book.

Re: Pompeii Nate's 42" Oven Build

                        Hey Russell,

We are finally getting good enough weather to start messing with the project now but let me tell you about our situation. We are trying to move to a different house around the corner from us which means a few possibilities. One, we move and leave the base I have created behind. Or 2, I figure out a way to move my entire base and take it with me. The way I see it though is it would probably cost just as much (if not more) to move it as it would to just start over. So I am torn. Do I start on the project and try to finish in case we don't sell quickly? Or do I just stop, leave the project as is and take all the material I have already purchased and take it with me if we move?

                        I am torn.

                        Thoughts?

Thanks for checking in either way. Your build is still an inspiration.

Damn, your base was taking shape. Good luck on your decision.
