Made some more progress today chain 9, 10 and 11 completed. I think I can finish off the dome tomorrow and clean up the inside of the dome. Thats the goal at least.
I do plan on a little buttressing of the arches. There is not going to be a whole lot of weight on them.
The arch will definitely have a buttress. I will make one as I'm enclosing the oven. Decided last night on building a structure around the oven. Ordered the chimney and other needed parts last night. Super excited for the next part of the build.
I'm building a circular house around the oven with a hexagonal roof. The house will be covered with the stone I pictured earlier in this thread. Thinking cedar shake for the roof but have not made up my mind yet. I do have some very strait grained white oak that I have been thinking of splitting with a froe to make my own shingles. But time might dictate my materials usage. we will see.
More progress. Getting the hang of how bricks and mortar work together... its getting fun.
Got brave after making the arch tonight and pulled the form as soon as the last brick went in.
My goals by the end of the coming weekend include Chimney, insulation, buttressing of the entry arch and hopefully some framework for the house. Sneak peak of what is to come...
1 inch of ceramic blanket over dome, covered by 2 inches of 7 to 1 perlite/portland cement.
Rough framing done. It was really fun to frame a circle.
Chimney mounted (I have another 24 inch section to add).
I was going to fill the structure with loose perlite after the walls are in but am having second thoughts. I have plenty of room for another 2 inches of blanket then fill the remaining space with loose fill. Before I take this route I just wanted to make sure I can do that over the perlite/portland cement layer. I know ideally The best insulation goes first but... Best laid plans.
G'day
You use 5 to 1 pearlite on the base to give it strength, use 8 to 1 10 to 1 on the dome cause the strength not important and insulation efficiently is. Loose filled pearlite is easy and efficient because it has no cement, why bother with blanket?

Walls will be hardiebacker as a base and the stones I pictured earlier in the thread.
Need to add a decorative brick arch over top of the fire brick oven entry.
Roof materials are still up in the air. I have a bunch of 8/4 popular wood that I could make into tongue and groove for the roof decking. I also have left over shingles that match my house and garage (free), but really want to do cedar shingles. Rafter ends will remain exposed as will the roof decking material as I don't want to box in the soffits.
I've been very cost careful with this build, trying to use what is available to me with little to no cost (as long as it does not affect the quality of the important parts). Most of the wood was left over from other projects or recycled. Stone was free. Hardiebacker I have scraps at work left over from a photo set build (glad I'm a packrat).
Right now I just want to get a roof over this thing before the weather gets any worse. It was 43 degrees here this morning... not ready for winter yet.
Still making good progress this week. Used the 8/4 popular wood I had on hand for the roof boards. Ran them thru my band saw to make them 4/4 as I did not have enough to make it if I left the boards 2" thick. Felt papered the roof tonight and got the chimney thru the roof again... as I stood back to check my progress I realized there is no reason not to start the curing fires
Fire has been going for the past 3+ hours. The dome peak has been hovering around 300-350 and the side walls have been around 200-250. Perfect night for a fire as its 45 degrees and falling outside.
I got a good deal on some B grade eastern white cedar shingles today.
The plan over the next 2-3 days is to keep going on the curing fires, cedar shingle the roof, get the chimney finished up and hopefully get the backer board on the walls.
