      Planter... Definitely a planter.

I'm continuing in my shameless imitation at Ken's fine work. I have neither the skill or patience to match his quality though. It's way too cold outside!
Nonsense! You aren't shamelessly imitating me, you're shamelessly imitating Balty's vent (which I also shamelessly imitated ). His vent is fancier than either of ours :

That is nice work by Balty. Somehow I missed his thread/pics.

Well, patience was never one of my virtues.

I pulled the arch form after 6 days. Amazingly enough, no disaster!

My song for the day, just for Frances, (Elton) I'm still standin', yeah, yeah, yeah........

Rain's a comin', then snow(?), then the big freeze. As the old saying goes in Washington State, "if you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes".
I'll get this thing completely cured someday.... probably not this week though.

In the mean time I guess I could deal with my screw-ups. I'm slightly out of square out front. My concrete forms moved about a quarter of an inch during the last concrete pour (under the entryway). I was rushing to get it done 'cause I'd promised the wife I'd take her shopping. Once I got about half the mud in there, I noticed that the forms had moved a bit, and there was no pushing them back into place at that point.

Nothing a masonry saw blade and grinder won't fix with a few hours effort. You can see where I ended up chiseling away the excess along the right hand side. I figure it's easier to cover up low spots than deal with high ones.

Anybody have any ideas about finishing this ugly monster? The corner installation seems to remove some of the more traditional options, other than igloo. I'd love to hear suggestions.

          Many thanks
          George

            A song for me? Cool

The vent looks really good, very professional, very solid (despite all your talk of broken bricks etc...)

If you don't like the idea of an igloo oven, you could always go for a pyramid shape. Or triangular maybe? What kind of finish did you have in mind?

Ha, I actually considered a pyramid. Give it an Egyptian theme. Triangular keeps reminding me of a military aircraft anti-radar shapes - Hmmm, probably not.

I've never really committed to any final look, as I was never sure I would get this far. I've considered stucco, brick, metal studs and Hardiboard/backerboard.

The chimney setup may determine the finish anyway, as I'm seeing conflicting information on the required spacing of supporting chimney straps. I've got to go up 8 feet high to get above the roofline. I may need to build in support in the lowest section to end up with the correct spacing to my wall strap.

              One problem at a time.....

                How bout a nice castle.

Stucco can be textured to look like old bricks...

a draw bridge for a door....
                fire breathing dragon

                a moat...

                just a thought.

Not sure how well it would blend with your house though!

                    Another HAHAHA,
I even considered that one too. Pretty crazy what you can come up with. I kind of like that idea though, Dave. We must be demented, huh?

Here's one: A Seattle Seahawks Helmet! I like the idea, but I'd kind of like to add to the appraised value of the house, rather than make it a head scratcher as to why the hell you would do that.

Acoma, my wife throws plenty of darts as it is. No need for bows and arrows.

                    Any other "out there" ideas?
                    Thanks

Been fishing George? The steelies are starting to show up here. King salmon run has been pityful - worst in 10-15 years. Even worse than last year which was horrible. I am almost ready to put the cover on the boat.
Got to tell ya... the football helmet is genius! I think you should go fo it. Just think, you could hang pots and oven tools and such from the face mask. Mabe have a thermometer in the ear hole. It"ll be great. And no property value worries - you could always repaint and re-logo to match the current trend or superbowl champ. And what a conversation piece! It's a win win.

                          Guys,
I've been watching the kids all week. The wife's finishing up her term at the local college, getting ready for finals etc.

I'm sitting here thinking I should make the trip to Portland (OR) this morning to pick up the Kaowool blanket, perlite/vermiculite, and maybe some firewood.

Frustrating week. Rainy and cold. They're talking about snow tomorrow, but the typical NW type that melts in a day. I called for an order of maple firewood Tuesday and the guy who looked like he'd just crawled out from under a rock only brought a load of fir, which wasn't even seasoned well enough to burn in the house this winter. Craig's list! Let the buyer beware.

I've been thinking about the steelies. I know they're out there. The Cowlitz river is just across town, and is the best producing river in the state. The Kalama and Lewis Rivers are also superb, and very close by. The problem is the rain gets the water high, cloudy and hard to fish. Perhaps once the wife finishes her classes, I'll get some time on the river.

As far as the finish for the oven, I'm kind of thinking about the classic igloo like this post of an oven in Thailand:

That's how I'm going to finish mine. Although a Dallas Cowboys helmet would be pretty freaking cool!

But one of these days I am going to build a portable oven for local events. That one will be a castle. I'm gonna call it "Dave's Pizza Kingdom"

I envy you and dusty... salmon and steelies..... Gosh that would be a blast!
