Biggest problem was I mixed too much mortar.

RefMIX aint cheap...i feel your pain there. Early on, I would find a good spot to finish and just discard any extra mortar. Towards the end, i FOUND a place to put a brick. even if it was only 1 brick on the next course.

You got that right Kemo. It KILLS me to waste that stuff. My last few batchs, though, I've been mixing 2 parts high heat mortar( the recipe in the plans with portland cement, fire clay, lime, and sand) with one part refmix. Seems to be working fine. I have enough refmix to mix 3 or 4 more batches and then I'm not sure what I will do. Either continue with the portland mix or suck it up and buy more refmix.

Temps are droppin' here. Decided it was time to gear up for winter. When it rains, I don't want that vermicu-crete stuff to get wet. It is like a sponge.
Also time to move some of the fun stuff inside. Note the indestructable net.

Nice enclosure. That should help. I don't remember seeing pictures of the brickwork on your stand before. It looks really great! I gotta take a look for more photos. Did you post them in another forum or is my Alzheimers kicking up again?

BTW, sorry to hear about the poor runs of Kings. Sadly, I have a feeling that it will only get worse as time goes on. Did you know that 100 years ago, there were native steelhead runs in virtually every stream on the West Coast, from Northern Mexico to AK? The Southern Californians of the 20's thought it was great sport to go out and catch hundreds at a time! Then dams, irrigation, pollution etc........ you know the rest of the story.

Well, we have an antiquated fish hatchery about 12 miles up river from Sac. Considering what they have to work with, they do a pretty good job managing both fisheries - salmon and then steelhead. No one, fisherman or bioligists, can explain where the salmon have been for the past two years. They know they're out there, just not sure where.

Yea... those sealions are excelent fishermen! The come all the way from S.F. bay to Sac. for the salmon run. They are really fun for the tourists, but when you see one in your fishing hole, you might as well move on.

As much as I would sometimes like to, if you were to get caught harvesting blubber from one of those "sacred" critters, you would be doing hard time at county. They are majestic when in their element, but when they come up the river and intrude on MY element, the are a true pain.

Up here on the Columbia, every once in awhile someone feeds one a stick of dynamite or a slug of lead after having a hooked fish eaten off their line. You can feel the silent applause in the air by all the local sportsmen in salute ( just before the Feds escort the perp. to jail).

How many inches is your oven sporting Dusty?

The worst one I have seen is when one grabed a guy's stringer that was hanging off of his 12' boat and almost capsized it. Turned it sideways long enough to allow about 1 1/2' of water to rush in. Lucky the guy didn't fall in the river.

Haven't had much time to work on raising the dome. I built the inside arch (thanks again Ken) yesterday, but the dome is still only 17 1/2" high (six courses). I hope to get back to it this week.

Wow! That's a fish story!

Once you get past the arch/dome transition, it will get a lot easier. I look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks George. Since Thanksgiving, it's been one of those "not enough hours in the day" phases that I'm sure everyone goes through from time to time. Except to just go out there and look at it, I have worked out there about 4 hours in the last week. And no end in sight. But when I do get back to it ,I will be sure to post some pics.
