I was also thinking of maybe drilling a 1/2 hole down the middle of the side briks to the concrete hearth (halfway through it) and putting a piece of rebar through it all. anyone ever done that? thoughts on if that would work?

Kind of depends on the chimney type, I have seen several of these type of configs that use SS chimney vents and "seems" to be solid enough. If you choose a masonry chimney then you definitely need to bolster the sides. You can add an additional stack of bricks along the verticals to bolster the side walls.

    Arch strong enough?

May have jumped into the arch to soon and didnt think through it all the way. Im worried that the way i built it its going to push the side walls out? thoughts? a buddy suggested an "L" bracket to help support the sides but curious on everyone's opinion?
