  • anybody done a pompeii with brick outter dome?

    evening all.
    i hope everyone is well.
im looking for examples of ovens with the outter dome constructed in brick rather than render..
im currenly planning my build and really want a brick face..
im planing on building internal dome and insulating as normal. then adding a thin layer of vermiculite/cement mix and then clad on top with brick slips.
is this the usual way a brick outter dome is achived?

any link or images to brick outter dome builds would be a huge help.
    thanks.

Hi Ian, I didn't exactly finish my outer dome in brick, however, having built the inner dome, fitted 50mm (2× 25mm with heavy foil vapour barrier) rockwool insulation which was then caged in chicken wire. I did a vermiculite/perlite render before completing an out dome with insulating firebrick and pointed these with a vermicrete mix. I then did 2 or 3 cement screeds before tiling with 10mm thick mosaic granite tile.

For anyone wishing to finish in normal clay brick it would be similar process for outer dome build, pointing up with homebrew fire cement or regular mortar. I must say, the outer dome goes up an awful lot faster than the inner dome.
Please see attached picture of outer insulating firebrick dome. No reason same cannot be done with regular clay brick so long as you have properly insulated your dome. When my oven is 500°C plus (temp gun only goes to 500°C), the outer dome is reading 4°C same as outdoor temp at the moment.
Hope this assists, feel free to ask anything else, i'm sure there will be other far more experienced members will assist wherever possible. I can offer little really but will always try.
Good luck with your build, you are certainly starting in the right place with this forum. There's a wealth of knowledge and talent on here, very generous with their time and guidance.

    Best wishes,

A beautiful example of a brick outer can be seen at Gulf's build.

Welcome Ian! I built a Pompeii style dome and then created an outer shell making my oven look like a barrel vault design. I've been very happy with the design & performance for over 11 years now. My build thread is linked below in my signature lines if you want to take a look at how I did it. Here's a couple pics during the final phases of the façade. Hope this & Gulf's build (plus many others on the forum) will give you some ideas for your oven.
