How important is it I build a lip into my arch???

Hi all,
I’m getting ready to do my arch for the opening and just now I’m reading the plans for a Pompeii oven where it says to have a lip so the door can be extra air tight. I’ve already constructed my arch props and wondering if it is that important, any feedback would be appreciated.

Ryan, I think the lip you are talking about is called a "reveal" and most builders provide for one by making their vent arches larger than the opening in their dome arch, usually by an inch or so. You can see mine in the first attached picture. If you make a door slightly smaller than the vent arch is will slide in the opening and butt against the dome arch (second picture)

thanks so much, this is much easier. Didn’t think of that, was going to try cut each individual arch brick and alter my jig. So thanks for saving me a heap of time, just need to alter my internal arch jig.

Here is another shot that might help. When I built my rear vent arch, I put in a heat break and cut my bricks so that they would overlap my oven arch both providing a gap for the heat break and to raise the bricks so that some of the face of my oven arch would be exposed for the reveal. First pic shows how the rear vent bricks go up and over the oven arch, second is a little further along the process
