  • 42" Mission-style in SoCal

We are starting with a less-than-ideal location: replacing a portion of our retaining wall with the oven foundation/base and building into our hill:

We are trying to build something similar to the Wood Fired Oven Chef on Youtube (BTW- he is very nice and even sent me some plans used to build his oven):

Since the base of the oven will also serve as a retaining wall, I hired a mason to help with the foundation and setting the blocks. I spent a few weeks annoying my neighbors with a jackhammer trying to get 12" dug out for the footing in very hard decomposed granite (I actually only got down a little over 10"):

After more jackhammering, I had leveled enough area and I had the masons come back to help form and pour the hearth:

Yes - Clive is a terrific fellow and had some great input in my own build too! He makes some AMAZING food - definitely something to remember when the building gets frustrating!
