    Woodhead,
you just need faith in your design, materials and workmanship. No, I was not the least but nervous in standing on it then, but several months ago when I was erecting my steel framework for my new patio, two heavy males were standing on it lifting the steel.
That was a little scary as it was not designed for that.

    Amber,
Thank you for the compliment, I take it as a positive rather than a negative.

Good - it was meant as a complement.

        Neil,

I think in Neills case they are probably stainless steel...seems to use it quite alot.

Les, that makes a guy feel about as good as a swift kick in the groin.

Well I got the final bricks into the top of the dome today (it all slowed down over Christmas!) and the outside looks good - right shape - a bit of fireproof mortar to cover all the gaps - and it is OK for strength, all seems good. Then I took a photo of the inside of the dome and all I could think of was the photos I have seen on this website, showing domes of perfection like the dome of St Peters or something - OMG I am NOT a mason!!!! The sooner I get a really smoky fire going in there to cover up all the blemishes the better!

Great choice on the dog - It's been 7 years this month when I bought my wife one - ours is chocolate, but the dog is the same. Buy lot's of toy's and bury your drip system at least a foot deep. I was admiring the cuteness and being pissed off at the same time watching her run across the lawn with 50 foot of tubing.

                      Les...

(Later the same day) - Yo! got the first fire going an hour ago - and it works a treat, the fire was very easy to light and began to draw immediately, and continued to burn really nicely when pushed back in to the centre of the oven. No smoke getting out through the gaps in the brickwork (well they are all covered in mortar, so didn't expect any problems) and over the next few days I should get the insulation layer on over the dome and run a few more fires gradually increasing in size.
                        Today has been GREAT!!

                          Woodhead,
are you sure that you got the dog for your wife or rather for yourself!
I had a very dark Golden lab for 14 wonderful years and miss him something shocking now. I will not replace him as no true friend can ever be replaced but I will get another dog when I retire and can spend thew time with him/her to prevent the destruction they do as pups.

                            Neill,

You are very perceptive. Our 190 lbs English Mastiff passed away a couple of months ago and to date that was one of the saddest days of my life. I couldnt wait to get another dog but I let it be my wifes idea. A dog is mans best friend!!

Back to oven building. I leave for Atlanta and my new job at the beginning of the year but i will be commuting for the first couple of months. We are selling the house so someone is going to get a pizza oven in the deal!! Wish I had put wheels on the oven.

There is always a method of geting around such problems with having to sell.
When we were trying to sell our home to build an even larger one 768 sq metres, people looked at our place and said, "Oh its got a pool, I guess that's a bonus"! Wrong.
If the people who buy don't want to pay more for the oven, then take it with you. It looks like you have easy access for a tractor with forklift so you could smash out 4 of your dry packed 'cinder blocks' and if you have run reinforcing mesh down the cores of your blocks, then run a diamond saw around the slab an simply lift it off, put it on a large palette and move to your next location.
All you then need to build is a foundation and base! maybe a mobile base for the next time.
However, should the people love it (as you should have some bread cooking in it when you have open inspections) at least you have the knowledge and sbetter skills to build the next one.

I agree on the dog choice- we have 2 1/2 labradors. A black one, a yellow one and a brown halfie. Her other half is German shep/husky. She's all mess, but we love her.

Dogs are wonderful pets- even when they have to leave us, we have such great memories of our time together...

I agree with Neill on moving the oven, it's very doable. But then it's also nice to be able to build a new one, since I think nearly all of us have "better ideas" after we do it once!
