sanding brick. Which belt to use?

Hello my invaluable friends,
I've read about grinding or sanding down the hearth brick to get to the rough bits. I would plan on using a belt sander for this but am wondering what belt to use. Is there a belt equivalent to a diamond blade for the saw or will any regular belt suffice if only because I'm just smoothing out a surface?

I recall buying 40 grit. The cheapest one's I could find. I went through 3 or 4of them.
