    Re: Eric's WFO build

Eric, the color looks really nice against the greens of the avocado and palm trees. Beautiful setting.
You made a door already? Is there a pic of it? I need to copy somebody .

      Re: Eric's WFO build

      Thanks Dino,
The stucco is going to be tiled with a mosaic on the dome eventually, but Cathy is taking that part of the project on. So I decided to color the stucco so it would be more aesthetic until the tiling gets done. Thus far I am using firebricks cut to the size of the inner arch for my door. I baked some bread Monday morning after pizza Sunday night. The bread was from unused pizza dough, though the rising schedule was way different than what I normally do it ended up delicious. With the bricks blocking the oven entrance I had 550 degrees the following morning and 350 the next night. I did a pork shoulder the next day but started it too early and had dehydrated pork. Oh well I will figure out the timing of these things.

Now to finish the adobe veneer and lower arch.

Thanks for the compliments John and Raffy. I was going to put a sealer on the stucco, but thought better of it since we will be tiling the dome and landing area(hopefully soon). Raffy the color is called Paper bag. It is a powder you add to the water before you mix the stucco. 1 bag of color to 1 bag of stucco, easy breezy.

I will cover the oven during the infrequent rainy periods here in San Diego county, until I get the dome tiled, then seal the tile and grout.

Nice work Eric! I also like the color and the chimney.
And that bread looks great! That should motivate me to try and finish the curing on my oven tonight...

Passed on the Indispensible tool yesterday, Thanks to Greg Geisen for giving it to me, and to Jim Gleim for making it.

            Hi everyone,
I just have to say that I have been ruined. I don't think I will ever buy pizza out again. 2 weekends in a row making pizza at home in my oven. It is like the difference between instant coffee and fresh ground brewed coffee.
Made 8 pizzas last night, making a tri tip stew tonight with the retained heat. One of my wine geek friends is in town so there will be some good wine consumed tonight.

How the heck did you eat eight pizzas? I've never made more than two at a time for me and my wife except for a party of six people for which four pizzas was sufficient.

I would love to throw a big party, but I imagine such will be a rare and special event.

Thanks Greg, building the oven was a very satisfying experience. Keith, we had 8 people, that is how we ate 8 of them. Next weekend there will be 24 people, good thing my kids have become adept at pizza making or I wouldn't be able to enjoy the party.

Your oven looks great. I am not entirely happy with my inner arch, but I plan on using your arch tool for the outer arch. Thanks for the idea.

I strongly recommend getting the angleizer program ( Home Depot- $20). for cutting the arch bricks it is the champ. If you are not tapering them then it probably isnt necessary.
For me once I knew that the bricks were the right size, then it was just maintaining the proper joint width, you can mark on the arch form where the joints should lie so you dont get too far away from your plan. I found it very helpful to mark the arch form. Once you let the joints get too thick then it is really hard to bring it back to where you want it.
                      Good luck,
                      Eric

Well I got the lower arch completed and the adobe veneer on the front. The amazing thing is that it actually looks like the picture I had in my mind ( at least it is amazing to me). Now to the prep area and mosaic of the dome.

look great. I am already jealous of what the mosaic is going to look like. It really is my favorite of all the designs. I just don't have it in me to go that bold. When can we get together for my bread baking lesson? ;-)

Ready for the tile counter and sink. Always a new skill to learn, I think that is the magic of this project. Cement work, retaining walls, footings , masonry, stucco, now tile and plumbing. I am going to be McGyver by the time I finish this project.
Greg, I don't know if you want me to teach you about bread, I am struggling lately with my bread. I think I am not quite dedicated to the timing and measurement part of it. I am going to go back to square 1 and do it just like the recipe says then see if my results are better. My bread is good but not great (my wife Cathy always compares it to Bread and Cie-the local artisan bakery, and it doesn't measure up yet- so I keep trying, and having fun doing so)

Its been a few weeks since I posted any progress. Finished the counter top and sink, put in an electrical outlet( many thanks to my friend Bruce for the help with the plumbing and electrical). My father in law Dick is fabricating some cabinetry and doors for the under counter storage. I am coming up on 1 year since I started this project in a couple of weeks.
