  • Home made timber pizza peel.

Here is a timber peel I made out of Celery Top Pine, not a true pine but its used a lot in boat building in Tasmania Au, it cuts and works like pine.

Re: Home made timber pizza peel.

          Hello All,

Is there a recommended wood that is good for a peel? My city has several hardwood supply stores and a variety of woods available at Lowe's and Home Depot. I think a straight grained wood that is lightweight and not sappy would be useful. Basswood, poplar, alder, come to mind, but there must be others that meet our needs too. What are your thoughts for a first time peel project? Thickness, dimensions, etc.

          Cheers,
          Bob

I made 4 peels from 6mm plywood. On either side of the handles I put 2 strips of 40x20 rounded Tassie oak trim which makes them easier to hold and ridgid enough to use. To make them a bit more waterproof and allow me to wash them down I rubbed a couple of coats of olive oil into them before using them.

It is now much easier to make up multiple pizzas and place them in the oven to cook. I still use my metal peel to turn & remove. I'll add a couple of pics later

I thought about ply but was concerned about the chemicals leeching from it into the pizzas.

I'll let you know if it kills me I don't think that the dough stays on there long enough to be a problem.

That is a lovely peel, the only thing it is missing is a pizza upon it.

I was more concerned about the heat of the oven driving off the nasties.

I just use my plywood peels to place the pizza in the oven so it is only in there for 5 seconds. With multiple peels I can make several pizzas and pop 3 in the oven at once to cook. I find it much easier to feed larger crowds this way.
