  • Is it okay to cover a ceramic blanket with an asthetic mortar?

So I have decided to cover my steel smoker with a ceramic blanket and the encase it with a refractory mortar mostly for aesthetic purposes. Any problems with this or suggestions on what mortar insulates best with a minimal coat?

    Thanks ,
    Patrick

The problem is that using blanket, if you compress it and get it wet, it loses it insulating properties.

For these reasons I prefer to cover the blanket with a layer of 10:1 vermicrete, which will even out the lumps and bumps in the blanket while being light enough not to compress the blanket. When thoroughly dry it provides a firm enough substrate to render/stucco over.

If you look at my build thread (below) I covered the blanket layer with chicken wire and then several thin coats of waterproof render; I actually used shower tile adhesive and then tiled over it. No problems to date.

So, you covered it with thin set? Thanks for all of the input BTW.
