  • A stronger arch

This is how I plan to do my dome and chimney arches.

    Hi Todd,

I like the way it looks. Will that design reduce the outward pushing forces on the side walls that most of our other arch designs have? Seems like it would.

    Keep up the great work!

      Re: A stronger arch

      Hi Ken,

I really like the squarish arch like on your oven VS. the round arch but I needed to find a way to make it more of an interlocking structure.

It should greatly reduce outward force - not eliminate it - but it does push a lot of the force down rather than out.

anyone want to run the numbers and map the load path????

      .

I like the proportions very much.

How does the base of the arch interlock with the dome ring? Are the bottom 3 or 4 bricks integrated into the opening of dome?

Hi Chrissto, yes this photo does not show the bottom two bricks so it is acutally 5" taller than what is shown.

Superb work so far, Todd! Let me guess - you're an engineer?

The strongest arch that can be achieved is a true semi circle. Is it needed in our apps - no. I think what you have going looks great and you should have no problems. I am assuming that I need to put around 200 pounds of brick, mortar, flue pipe on top of mine. That is why I added some more steel. If you are going to load any arch - I would plan on some support. Fire brick, being solid, doesn't offer near as much in shear strength as core's do.

Great work Dude, like I said , make us proud. I KNOW you can do it.
